Messi Ahead of the Princess of Asturias Award: “Barcelona Is My Life”

Introduction

On October 22, Fabrizio Romano reported Messi’s quote reflecting on his Barcelona days. The interview took place in Oviedo, Spain, at the Hotel de la Reconquista.

Former Barcelona player Lionel Messi gave credit to his close friends, including Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, and many other players, and highlighted the crucial events and moments that happened during that time.

Ahead of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award

The interview was conducted by the Spanish news agency EFE before the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.

On October 23, Lionel Messi is scheduled to receive the Princess of Asturias Award, which was planned by Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

Brotherhood

Messi expressed the feeling of brotherhood within the Barcelona squad by saying:

Lionel Messi: “In Barcelona, we were lucky to win everything… not only because of what we achieved, but also because of the way we did it, and how much we enjoyed playing, winning, and achieving important milestones”.

“We loved the beautiful moments we spent together”.

What Barcelona Meant to Him

During his interview, Lionel Messi had a hard time explaining what Barcelona meant to him in a few words because Barça is part of his life and his club for life. However, he described it by saying:

Lionel Messi: “Barcelona means a lot to me. I feel special love for the city, the club. It will always be like this”.

Wishes of Jorge

There’s always “the next move.”

Lionel Messi also addressed his father, Jorge, and the impact of his support on his life and career.

He said that Jorge wanted to see his son lifting this award, which made him emotional. However, he continued the interview slowly and calmly.

Father and Son

He described his relationship with his father as one where they “were always in communication,” exchanging ideas after every training session or match.

My Perspective

In my perspective, this was a very thoughtful act by Argentine star Lionel Messi. I believe that he made a good decision by giving credits to his friends and his former club, Barcelona.

In particular, paying tribute to his father, Jorge, once again was one of the best moments of the interview he has given so far.
