José Mourinho’s Negreira Comments Spark Backlash and Heated Football Debate

Introduction

On October 8, Fabrizio Romano reported Portuguese coach José Mourinho’s controversial comments linking to his 2010–2013 Real Madrid years and bringing up the Negreira case once more, heating up social media again.

Mourinho’s Comments

José Mourinho shared his perspective on the Negreira case with the major Italian sports outlet Corriere dello Sport and said:

“I arrived at Real Madrid during the PRIME Negreira years.”

“I remember no one knew about it, but we felt and lived it. As soon as I left, everyone knew.”

“Then in Turkey, the big scandal… and again everyone knew after I left Fenerbahçe.”

Backlash?

After his comments on the Negreira case, José Mourinho received significant backlash from fans, as Barcelona supporters flooded social media with comments such as “Stop it unc” and “No one believes you.”

Diving into the Negreira Case

The Negreira case has been a major point of controversy involving Barcelona, Real Madrid, and the courts since February 15, 2023.

The case is linked to Spanish businessman José María Enríquez Negreira. Allegations suggest that Barcelona paid roughly €7–8 million between 2001 and 2018 to companies controlled by Negreira and his son.

Barcelona’s Defence

Club officials, including presidents Joan Laporta, Sandro Rosell, and Josep Maria Bartomeu, were associated with the periods in which the payments were made. Barcelona has said the money was for technical reports and advice on refereeing trends.

UEFA and Real Madrid’s Involvement

The Negreira case continues, with Real Madrid reportedly providing a 50,000-page dossier to the court. UEFA is also reviewing the matter through a separate investigation.
