Cody Gakpo to Manchester City: Why Liverpool Are Selling a Star to Their Rivals

Introduction

On August 30, Fabrizio Romano announced that Manchester City are very close to finalizing all the details of the Cody Gakpo deal as soon as Liverpool agree to sign his replacement.

Contract Details

Contract Length: 5-year deal running until 2031

Transfer Fee: £85 million package

Salary: Unknown

Personal Terms: Agreed between Manchester City executives and Gakpo. However, the salary has not been announced publicly.

3 Rivals for One Player

This summer, only two British clubs were interested in Gakpo, including:

Manchester City: The first rumor came on August 24 and became more serious on August 30.

Tottenham Spurs: They were the ones who made the first attempt. However, Manchester City’s late offer changed everything.

Gakpo’s Checkmate

Gakpo’s preference was moving to a different club after Bradley Barcola joined Liverpool, meaning he could become more of a rotational player.

When Spurs’s offer arrived, Liverpool were not a fan of selling Gakpo to them, as Liverpool view Spurs as a rival. However, Manchester City’s attractive transfer fee changed everything in Liverpool’s transfer perspective.

Hours Before the Move

Saturday evening, August 29: Ornstein reported that Gakpo had chosen Man City over Tottenham.

Saturday evening, August 29: Personal terms with City were agreed and talks started over an £85m fee.

Sunday morning, August 30: Romano said City were confident they could finish the deal once Liverpool signed a replacement.

Is This the Right Move: My Perspective

In my perspective, this is a mediocre decision from Manchester City. Honestly, Cody Gakpo is not the type of player I personally like. However, I believe that he could reshine at Manchester City, as consistency is more guaranteed at City compared to Liverpool.

Overall, this is an average decision from Enzo Maresca’s City. However, the transfer fee and Gakpo’s playing style do not match with City’s style, concerning me and the fans.
