FIFA Reveals Paredes Punishment: Will Argentina Protest the Fifa’s Decision?

Introduction

On August 21, Fabrizio Romano announced FIFA’s official decision after a post-match brawl in the 2026 World Cup final, where Spain beat Argentina 1-0.

Players Who Received the Ban

Several Argentinian and Spanish players received heavy suspension punishments, including:

Paredes: 10-game ban + $90,000 fine

Molina: 7-game ban + $90,000 fine

Almada: 1-game ban + $30,000 fine

Ayala: 3-game ban + $30,000 fine

Gavi: 1-game ban + $30,000 fine

Where Will the Suspension Apply?

The suspensions will apply only in international matches. The Argentina Football Federation also received a huge fine, as the reason was stated as unacceptable behavior and discriminatory chants during the tournament.

The AFA was fined $321,000, while Argentina will also have restrictions on spectators for their next two home matches.

Historical World Cup Bans

Players rarely receive disciplinary actions from FIFA. However, some players have done crazier things that stunned all the fans, including:

Zidane/Materazzi (2006): During a match against Italy, Materazzi was trash-talking Zidane and provoking him throughout the match. As a result, Zidane headbutted Materazzi and received a red card and a 3-match international ban.

Luis Suárez (Uruguay, 2014 World Cup): During a match against Italy, Luis Suárez bit Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder and received a 9-match international ban, which was later combined with a four-month football-related ban.

My Perspective

In my perspective, this is a great decision from FIFA. Suspending a troublemaker like Paredes is very crucial, suggesting FIFA’s authority and highlighting the consequences during an international match if you assault someone physically.

Overall, great decision from FIFA, but Gavi should not have received any suspension, as he was defending himself from several players and officials failed to protect him.
