Introduction
On August 16, Fabrizio Romano exclusively announced the completed transfer of Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City to Barcelona for approximately €76.5 million.
Contract Details
Transfer Fee: €60 million + €16 million in transfer bonuses
Contract Length: Four-year deal running until June 2030
Salary: €15 million per season
Note: The deal is about to be completed. Both sides have agreed on the offer, and Barcelona are waiting for Rodri to sign the legal documents to officially complete the transfer.
Why Did Rodri Prefer Number 16?
Rodri will wear number 16 because it is a preferred decision and a number that has been long associated with his senior career.
Number 16 is a reminder of where Rodri started from, and it may mean a lot to him. Number 16 may also have a secret message about retiring at Barcelona.
Also, the former holder of number 16, Fermín López, has changed his jersey number to number 7 to give Rodri the opportunity for his request to be fulfilled.
Rodri was linked with Real Madrid, and they offered a similar amount of money and opportunity. However, the changing factor was Barcelona’s influence and tactical style under Hansi Flick.
Why Did Rodri Choose Barcelona?
Rodri preferred Barcelona for several reasons, including:
- Barcelona’s dominant possession-based gameplay under German coach Hansi Flick
- Having a chance to play with his teammates from the Spain national team at the same club
- Barcelona’s influence on Rodri
My Perspective
In my perspective, this is a solid decision from Barcelona. Buying a player like Rodri is a luxury both defensively and offensively.
In my opinion, Barcelona have found the missing piece in their midfield after many years.
Barcelona have had many great CDMs since 2015, however, Sergio Busquets always remained the best. But Rodri may surpass his achievements and performances.
I believe he will strengthen Barcelona’s possession tactics in every way possible.
