Introduction

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was officially named the new head coach of the German national football team on Friday morning, following Julian Nagelsmann’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended in a shocking Round of 32 defeat to Paraguay.

Contract Details

Jürgen Klopp has signed a contract until 2030. He will coach the German national team during the 2027 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2028, and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The former Liverpool coach is not looking to extend the contract. He views this milestone as the final dot in his career, making the appointment even more emotional.

Klopp has not worked in management since leaving Liverpool in 2024. He was named Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer in January 2025 and has been working as an analyst at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Magenta TV.

Klopp’s First Press Conference

Speaking in an emotional tone during his first press conference, the 59-year-old German manager made his commitment to the national team very clear.

“The day you don’t want me anymore, I’m gone — without any severance pay.”

“If you say tomorrow that I’m rubbish, I’m gone.”

“If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace, I’m gone.”

“Criticize me if something doesn’t work. I’m happy to work on it. It’s all about the job.”

“Jürgen Klopp doesn’t have a career after the national team. Ideally, this is the highlight of my career.”

My Perspective

In my perspective, this is a poor decision for the German national team.

In a national team, there are bunch of young talents who are passionate and ready to sacrifice themselves like soldiers during a match. Bringing a man who already retired from coaching two years ago was not the best option.

Germany needs a coach who is looking further to improve his career, prestige, and most importantly, the national team.

In overall, Jürgen Klopp is a mastermind. His gegenpressing philosophy, making young talents better, and using them correctly are what make him one of the greatest managers of this generation. However, I still think Germany should have appointed a younger manager with a longer vision for the future.
