What Will Happen to Paredes and Argentina After World Cup Final Brawl?

Introduction

On 19 July, Argentina faced Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Although Spain lifted the trophy, the match will also be remembered for the chaos after the final whistle.

How the Fight Started

After Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time, tensions exploded as Spain celebrated their victory. Nahuel Molina confronted Rodri before Leandro Paredes pushed Gavi and Eric García to the ground.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni stepped in and eventually separated the players.

Footages From The Fight

Gavi’s Reaction

After the match, Gavi defended the Argentine players by saying:

“I do NOT think Argentina players should be suspended.”

“I understand that this doesn’t present a good image for the children, but football has always had a more aggressive side.”

His comments received heavy backlash from many football fans.

Investigation

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has opened an investigation into the post-match incidents. No official disciplinary decision has been announced yet.

My Perspective

In my opinion, this was a disgraceful act from the Argentine players. They are representing an entire nation, and this is how they behave?

Players like Leandro Paredes should not be selected for the national team again unless they apologise for their actions. Meanwhile, some Argentina fans are treating him like a hero, as if he invented a revolution.
