Introduction
Today, Spain faced Uruguay in the World Cup group stage at Estadio Guadalajara, Zapopan.
The match was very balanced as both teams could not find enough chances to score.
Awful Performance From Spain
Spain was viewed as one of the favorites to win the World Cup. However, after this performance, I believe they cannot even reach the quarter-finals.
The issues have not been fixed since the Cabo Verde match, where they drew 0-0 thanks to the incredible performance from Vozinha.
My Grade to Spain: C+
In my opinion, Spain deserves a C+ for this performance. Although they won the match, they failed to create enough dangerous chances and once again struggled against a well-organised defence.
The Goal of Alex Baena
Marcos Llorente dribbled past a Uruguay defender and then delivered an awkward cross into the box. Uruguay’s defence made a mistake, allowing Alex Baena to control the ball.
Baena turned towards Fernando Muslera and fired his shot. Muslera made a rookie mistake and the ball went into the net.
Muslera’s Embarrassing Mistake
After the embarrassing mistake by Muslera, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa decided to substitute him in the 42nd minute.
This shocked football fans around the world as it is one of the rarest things that can happen in a football match under any circumstances.
Muslera’s Apology
Muslera expressed his sadness and asked the fans for forgiveness by saying:
“Le pido perdón al pueblo uruguayo.”
(“I ask forgiveness from the Uruguayan people.”)
